The
work contents five scenes, playing in the years 1933 until 1945 in the World War two.
Contents:
“The Night of The Long Knives”
… after the
burning of the Reichstag a worker kills his own brother, because he has been
tortured into becoming a helper of the SA…
“I Had A Comrade”
… stranded in a
land of ice three soldiers kill their fourth and weakest comrade in a order to
survive…
“Bourgeoisie Wedding”
… a man kills his wife
and daughter upon the order of the Führer that no one should survive the German
disgrace. But then he decides to live himself; because it is also true that
“The strong is mightiest when alone”.
“Butcher and Wife”
… out of fear,
after the war has ended, a butcher, who has murdered a captive American
soldier, wants to commit suicide by drowning himself. His wife (Charlotte
Schwab) wants to safe him at first, but after some considerations she pushes
his husband under water, to rather go on living as a widow…
“The Sheet”
… in Berlin
several soldiers hide in a basement during the street fighting of 1945. When
the SS comes to kill the traitors, one soldier is sacrificed to safe the
others. Soon after, the Russians arrive and hand out bread; but new fighting starts
among the traitors: for food and survival…
The author Heiner Müller wanted to show how people
react under the pressures of war and fascist terror, how they turn into
monsters… vividly portrayed in conversations with two or three people.
(The play premiered in East Berlin on October 30,
1975)
